Digital Manufacturing Challenge Winners

Since 2007, various colleges/universities/high schools have participated in SME’s Additive Manufacturing Community’s annual Digital Manufacturing Challenge, which is sponsored by the community’s Direct Digital Manufacturing Tech Group. Below are links to the winners for this student design competition.


High School

  • Winning Design: Adaptable Emergency Survival Backpack Utilizing Multipurpose Modularity by Kailani Lenert, Jasmine Lo, Sean Wilbur, Ava Raugust and academic advisor Peter Waydo from Coronado High School and El Capitan High School
  • Runner Up: Future of Natural Disaster Medication Relief: How 3D Printing can Enable a Future of Quick and Efficient Medicine Distribution by Daniel Huang, Keira D’Costa and advisor Wenxuan Chai from Eastside High School


  • Winning Design: 3D-Printed Water Filter by Andrew Langer, Cameron Constantine, Josh Lee and academic advisor Dr. Su from Slippery Rock University
  • Runner-Up: Additive Manufacturing of Emergency Food & Liquid Storage Solution by Aum Suthar, Harish Mukkapati and academic advisor Chris Ratcliff from The Ohio State University


  • Winning Design: On-site Additive Manufacturing of Water Filtration and Decontamination Devices by Daniel Alves Heinze, Michelle Pomatto, Yiqun Fu and advisor Dr. Christopher B. Williams from Virginia Tech
  • Runner-Up: The Antimicrobial Water Bottle by B.Sc. Kai-Uwe Beuerlein, M.Sc. Cara Greta Kolb and academic advisor Prof. Saeed Maleksaeedi, Assistant Professor from University of Waterloo

  • Winning Design: Hybrid Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing of Topology Optimized Aviation Components by Daniel Chirvasuta, Nathanael High, Matthew Martin, T. Benjamin Nguyen, Omkar Shinde, Nicolas Tomanelli and faculty advisors Dr. Chris Williams and Sam Prattfrom and industry advisor Dan Braley at Virginia Tech.
  • 2nd Runner Up: 3D Printed Timing Belts by Logan Noster, Laura Zerla, Eliot Liu and advisor Dr. Jorge Camba from Purdue University.
  • 3rd Place: Rapid Design Through Manufacturing of Polymer Based Parts for Medical Applications by Ibrahim Yousif, Alex Brasington, Joshua Halbritter, Teddy Tarekegne and faculty advisor Dr. Clint Saidy at University of Southern California.

  • Runner Up: Hybrid Face Mask / Face Shield Design by Joshua Chen, Joshua Ocampo, Joshua Newberry, Brandon Lucaci, Chris Houghtelin and advisor Dr. Linda Chen from Washington State University Vancouver.
