Nomination/Election Time Table

SME International Director and Member Council Representative applications will be reviewed by the SME Joint Nominating Committee each spring. Candidates selected by the Nominating Committee to run for election will be notified. Ballots for the International Director and Member Council elections will be mailed to the voting membership on or before August 1st and must be returned to the Teller’s Committee no later than September 1st. Election results will be announced mid-September and installation of the newly elected International Directors and Representatives will take place before year-end. Terms of office will begin on January 1st of the year following the election. International Directors and Representatives are elected for two-year terms.

  4. Guiding SME in the best interest of its members.

Individual International Director Fundraising Expectation:

Each International Director shall make an annual personal cash donation to the SME Education Foundation, with a minimum of $250. International Directors are also encouraged to provide additional financial support such as to local chapters, local scholarships, SME Bridge Program participation, personally incurred travel, etc. with all support including the Education Foundation totaling a minimum of $500. This commitment asks that International Directors put SME and the Education Foundation high in their philanthropic priorities and recognizes that International Directors will be expected to give to the best of their means, at a level they would consider generous.

Candidate Application for SME Member Council Representative

Role of the SME Member Council

  • Policy Formulation and Coordination: The SME Member Council plans, formulates, and coordinates policies and procedures concerning administration of its sub-committees, task groups and local and at-large member engagement.
  • Strategic Alignment: Ensures alignment of policy and program development with SME’s Strategic Plan and overall mission.
  • Communication and Reporting: Responsible for communicating strategies to member units and reporting progress to the SME Board of Directors.
  • Local & Global Influence: Focuses on the growth and viability of SME's local member engagement network with a global impact, influencing manufacturing professionals worldwide. SME members who are elected to serve on the SME Member Council are not to be advocates for any one constituency (i.e., chapter, district, technical community, etc.), but rather for SME as a whole.

Qualifications & Criteria - SME Member Council Representative

  • Membership Standing: Eligible candidates must be a voting member of SME in good standing for the year preceding nomination to be eligible for consideration.
  • Leadership Track Record: Proven professional or business leadership in manufacturing with a strong track record. Ideally, a potential SME Member Council candidate should have the qualifications that would make them a potential candidate for the SME Board of Directors.
  • Strategic Planning and Organization: Demonstrated ability to strategically plan, organize, and produce results effectively.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, essential for effective collaboration.
  • Commitment: The candidate must be available for required network or phone conference meetings as well as related travel for up to two meetings per year.
  • Technological Proficiency: Comfort and proficiency in electronic communication, including email, and computer software skills.
