Prioritizing Inclusion in Manufacturing

Our industry must be inclusive and open to everyone to thrive. 

I’ve seen numerous examples of the power of teamwork throughout my career. Collaboration between businesses, strong relationships with clients and cooperation between management and employees are all great examples of teamwork in action. Passionate manufacturing professionals working together with common goals will ultimately drive our business forward. One thing is abundantly clear; diversity of thought, approach, and opinion amongst collaborative employees who feel welcome and have their voices heard will allow organizations to do great things.

It’s inspiring to hear other manufacturing leaders discuss their views of a diverse and inclusive workforce. During an interview with Canadian Manufacturing, Melissa Chee, president and CEO of ventureLAB explained, “Diversity of thought comes from different experiences and different backgrounds. You need different opinions…part of why we’ve succeeded as an organization is our reliance on merit and talent, and that comes from different backgrounds and networks.”

That type of insight and perspective from employees is incredibly valuable. The stronger your knowledge base on a particular challenge, the better understanding and perspective you’ll have when issues arise. In turn, you will be better prepared to develop a response, and ultimately find a solution. That is why a team of diverse individuals bodes well for any organization.

One way to foster this behavior is through the implementation of diversity, equity and inclusive initiatives. However, having a DE&I program alone is not enough. Implementing these programs within an organization takes time and a concerted effort by everyone. It’s a process that requires a commitment to change across the organization, starting at the top.

Manufacturing offers exciting opportunities to work with a variety of challenging, innovative projects and a long-lasting career. But it may be hard for some people to see themselves in STEM related fields if they don’t feel welcome, included and heard.

Having role models and professional representation within manufacturing is of paramount importance, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. Recently, Dr. Jane Rigby, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, was awarded the by Out to Innovate. Her comments on inclusion in STEM fields are enlightening, “When I was a student, all through college, I wasn't aware of any LGBTQ role models. I hope I'm part of the last generation who grow up without queer role models.  I hope this award brings hope to queer folks pursuing careers in STEM, and I hope it reminds organizations that inclusion matters every single day.”

It’s people like Dr. Rigby and programs like Out to Innovate that are driving change and advancing the industry by empowering, supporting, and representing the LGTBQ+ community. June is Pride Month and as part of our DE&I initiative, SME recognizes the impact of the LGBTQ+ community and individuals who’ve had a positive impact on society, more specifically within the manufacturing space.

Manufacturing is an industry that must welcome people of all backgrounds, allowing for a variety of perspectives. This approach generates a healthier and happier workforce. As the Executive Director and CEO of SME, it’s my responsibility to foster a workplace culture that welcomes all employees. A safe space and comfortable work atmosphere builds a sense of belonging and reinforces the inclusiveness for which we all strive. Manufacturing is stronger when communities come together; having an inclusive workforce is important for any organization to succeed.

I truly believe one should lead by example. That is precisely why the SME Education Foundation’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiative was implemented. By design, we strive to fully integrate opportunities for underrepresented and disadvantaged communities across the country. The SME Education Foundation is working hard to increase opportunities for women, minorities, and marginalized groups. This is just one small piece to the larger puzzle.

We must embrace and celebrate our differences. Creation of an environment that allows everyone to feel included allows our industry to innovate, evolve and flourish. I challenge each of you to take steps to achieve an open, inclusive environment within your organization.
